9.9 Running the setup program

To install any P-Synch software on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 server, run the SETUP.EXE program in the software distribution.

The setup program displays a sequence of three introductory screens containing:

  1. Phone and e-mail addresses to use to ask for assistance.
  2. A license agreement, which you must accept to proceed.
  3. A component selection dialog box.

Depending on the components you choose to install, the SETUP.EXE program displays a sequence of dialog boxes requiring you to provide information about:

  1. Master P-Synch server:

    1. Web server directories:

P-Synch attempts to determine the default setting for the directory that your web server accesses static documents and executes CGI programs. You may override these values.

P-Synch will look for your FTP server, and find out where remote users can deposit files. You may override this directory as well.

If you are using an iPlanet server, P-Synch prompts you to select the profile on which P-Synch will run.

      Caution:
P-Synch makes changes to the iPlanet configuration. Ensure that you are not logged in to the iPlanet administration web site. The next time you log in to the iPlanet administration web site, it may warn you that its configuration files have been manually edited. Be sure to apply the changes to the running web site before making any other modifications.

    2. Application login:

Enter an application login ID and password to access the P-Synch administration facility on the web. Specify a user ID and password for this login.

    3. Directories:

Specify the directory from which P-Synch software is being copied, a temporary directory for log files, and the directory where software will be installed.

    4. Security key:

Network communication between P-Synch components is protected using a secret encryption key. Define a key (a random value is presented by default) on the master server. The same key must be applied to all other P-Synch components on the network.

    5. todo.txt and browser:

After the master server has been installed, SETUP.EXE displays the TODO.TXT file. This file contains important information such as the anonymous userid and password, the security key entered in the previous screen, and any steps that the setup program failed to complete and need to be performed manually.

If you have IIS 3.0 or higher, your default browser opens to the P-Synch administrative web page so that you can finish configuring P-Synch.

  2. Slave P-Synch server:

    1. Slave service parameters:

The master P-Synch server can copy its updated configuration to multiple slave servers, nightly. Configure each slave server to accept connections from the master server.

The slave service runs as a named user, normally the same as the user that runs all services on the master server. Specify this user ID and password.

The slave service listens on a TCP port, which the master server contacts to initiate replication. Specify the port number.

    2. Directories:

Specify the directory from which P-Synch software is being copied, and the directory where software will be installed. The destination directory should be the same as on the master server.

    3. Security key:

Network communication between P-Synch components is protected using a secret encryption key. Enter the same key here as you did on the master server.

  3. P-Synch proxy server:

Configure a proxy server using the same procedure as a master server. Once it is installed, configure the required target systems using the web administration interface, and start a proxy service for each target system.

  4. Transparent synchronization DLL

    1. Pushpass information

Specify the DNS name of the P-Synch server and the TCP port number where the transparent synchronization service is installed and started.

    2. Target identifier:

You must enter the target identifier of the target you are installing on as it is configured in the P-Synch master server. This target must be configured as a P-Synch target system on the master server before the synchronization DLL will function properly.

    3. Directories:

Specify the directory from which P-Synch software is being copied, and the directory where software will be installed.

    4. Security key:

Network communication between P-Synch components is protected using a secret encryption key. Enter the same key here as you did on the master server.

  5. PSACE service

    1. Configure the PSACE service

Specify the account and password with which the PSACE service will run, and the TCP port number which the P-Synch server will connect to on the ACE server.

    2. Directories:

Specify the directory from which P-Synch software is being copied, and the directory where software will be installed.

    3. Security key:

Network communication between P-Synch components is protected using a secret encryption key. Enter the same key here as you did on the master server.

  6. OTG HelpYourself server

    1. Pushpass information

Specify the DNS name of the P-Synch server and the TCP port number where the transparent synchronization service is installed and started.

    2. Directories:

Specify the directory from which P-Synch software is being copied, and the directory where software will be installed.

    3. Security key:

Network communication between P-Synch components is protected using a secret encryption key. Enter the same key here as you did on the master server.
